The staff of the Natural Resources and Environment Department of the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) works on lands, natural resources and environmental matters of concern to Yukon First Nations. They participate on intergovernmental Boards and Committees as CYFN representatives. The Yukon First Nation Forestry Program is administered by this Department.

On May 13, 2003, the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA) received Royal Assent. The development and implementation of this Act was a fulfillment of Chapter 12 of the Umbrella Final Agreement which required the establishment of a development assessment process. The Department assists Yukon First Nations in preparing for the implementation of YESAA.
