Council of Yukon First Nations Welcomes New Liberal Territorial Government

WHITEHORSE (Yukon) — Peter Johnston, Grand Chief of the Council of Yukon First Nations congratulates Sandy Silver and the Yukon Liberal party on being elected in the Territorial election. The Yukon Liberal Party won a majority government with 11 seats, followed by the Yukon Party with 6 and the NDP with 2.

“The confidence and support you have received from Yukoners during the election is a credit to the Yukon Liberal Party. Yukon First Nations are ready to collaborate with the Liberal Government on issues that are important to Yukon First Nations,” said Grand Chief, Peter Johnston.

Yukon First Nations look forward to working with the Liberal Government on their election commitment to hold a Yukon Forum within 30 days of being elected and to have the Premier and Cabinet meet with First Nation Chiefs to establish priorities to build a stronger Yukon. Additionally, Yukon First Nations look forward to a revitalized Yukon Forum that meets as agreed upon and supports First Nations priorities such as the repeal of Bill S-6, amendments to YESAA, and respects Land Use Planning processes established in the Umbrella Final Agreement.

“It is imperative that the Liberal Government recognizes the spirit and intent of our Final and Self Government Agreements,” said Grand Chief, Peter Johnston. “Further, I would like to recognize the First Nations women, Jeanie Dendys, Geraldine Van Bibber and Pauline Frost on being elected, your presence in the legislative assembly is essential.”
